Excerpt from Official Records of the Union and Confederate Navies in the War of the Rebellion, Vol. 9: North Atlantic Blockading Squadron, From May 5, 1863, to May 5, 1864 In March, 1897, Mr. Rush, having been ordered to sea, was succeeded by Professor Edward K. Rawson, U. S. Navy, as superintendent. No change is contemplated at present in the outline of the plan of publication as approved by the Department. This plan includes only the use of such material as may be certified to be contemporaneous naval records of the war, tch is divided into three series, in the following order of arrangement: I. The first series embraces the reports, orders, and correspondence, both Union and Confederate, relating to all naval operations on the Atlantic and Gulf coasts and inland waters of the United States during the war of the rebellion, together with the Operations of vessels acting singly, either as cruisers or privateers, in different parts of the world.
